Health camp planning checklist
To organise a health camp, work through three stages: before (permission, site, people, supplies and waste), on the day (registration, consent, segregation and referral) and after (waste handover, records, referrals, follow-up and the report). These 35 items are built on the 18-point readiness checklist in the MedBrains camp module, with the biomedical waste rules that apply to camps.

What the references mean
BMW is the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016 (G.S.R. 343(E), 28 March 2016, as amended up to April 2026; the amendments are listed on CPCB's rules page). Rule 2 applies them to health, medical, surgical, vaccination and blood donation camps; rule 4 lists the occupier's duties; rule 8 covers segregation and the 48-hour limit; Schedule I sets the colour categories.
Codes such as FMS, IPC or PRE are the areas of the NABH hospital standards each readiness item maps to in the camp module: facility management and safety (FMS), infection prevention and control (IPC), patient rights and education (PRE), information management system (IMS), human resource management (HRM), access, assessment and continuity of care (AAC), care of patients (COP), management of medication (MOM), patient safety and quality improvement (PSQ) and responsibilities of management (ROM).
Government programme camps report through their programme's own system, for example the SASHAKT portal used to track camps under the Swasth Nari Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan.
Running camps on software
The MedBrains camp module carries this readiness checklist for every camp, works offline at the venue and brings records, samples and referrals back to the hospital. Read how it fits government medical camps, NGO health camps and corporate health camps, and an honest comparison with paper.
Questions
How do you organise a health camp?
Plan it in three stages. Before: get permission for the venue, plan the patient flow, name a person for every station, pack supplies checked for expiry and arrange biomedical waste handling and referrals. On the day: register each person once, take consent, segregate waste where it is made and refer red-flag patients in writing. After: hand over the waste, sync records, reconcile referrals, schedule follow-ups and write the camp report.
Do the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules apply to health camps?
Yes. Rule 2 of the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016 names health camps, medical or surgical camps, vaccination camps and blood donation camps among the places the rules apply to. Waste must be segregated at the point of generation into the Schedule I colour categories, and untreated soiled waste must not be stored beyond 48 hours.
Which waste goes in which colour at a camp?
Under Schedule I: yellow for soiled waste such as dressings and swabs, and expired or discarded medicines; red for contaminated recyclable plastics such as tubing, syringes without needles and gloves; white puncture-proof containers for needles, blades and other sharps; and blue cardboard boxes for broken or discarded glass, including vials and ampoules.
What staff does a medical camp need?
At least one named person per station: registration, vitals and triage, the doctor or doctors, sample collection if tests are done, a pharmacist or dispensing owner, someone at the referral desk, and volunteers for crowd control. One person should own escalation and one should own waste handover and the post-camp upload.
