In short: ABHA is a free, voluntary 14-digit health ID issued under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. It lets your records from different hospitals and labs follow you, and they are shared only with your consent.

If you have changed doctors or moved cities, you know the problem: your reports are in a dozen places — a file at home, a WhatsApp chat, a lab’s website. The Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) is India’s answer to that.

What ABHA is

ABHA is a free, 14-digit health ID issued under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). You can also pick an easy-to-remember ABHA address, like name@abdm. It is voluntary.

What it does for you

  • Your records can follow you. Hospitals, clinics and labs that are linked to ABDM can connect your prescriptions, reports and discharge summaries to your ABHA.
  • You see them in one place, in an ABDM-linked health app on your phone.
  • Faster registration. Many hospitals can register you by scanning a QR code instead of filling in forms again.

You decide who sees what

Nobody can pull your records just because they know your ABHA number. A doctor or hospital has to ask for your consent, and you choose which records, for how long, and you can withdraw that consent.

How to get one

Go to the official site, abha.abdm.gov.in, and sign up with Aadhaar or another supported method. Only use the official government site or apps listed on it, and never share an OTP with anyone who calls you about your health ID.

What it means for hospitals

For a hospital, ABDM means fewer repeat tests, faster registration and records that arrive complete. It also means building consent and privacy into everyday software — which is how we build MedBrains.

This article is general information. For the latest rules, see the official ABDM website.
